Tehran, Iran – Pezhvak Energy has successfully completed a complex drilling operation at the Jufair-9 well, drilling two horizontal boreholes within a 10-meter-thick Ilam reservoir layer.
The company's Head of Engineering for the Sepehr-Jufair Project, Hossein Jafari, announced the milestone. The well was initially drilled vertically to a depth of 2,400 meters before deviating horizontally. The main leg, measuring 6 1/8 inches, was drilled to a length of 1,000 meters, while the second leg, measuring 5 7/8 inches, extended 500 meters.
Jafari highlighted the challenges posed by the low permeability of the Ilam reservoir rock. To overcome this, the team employed geosteering techniques, utilizing Logging While Drilling (LWD) and Measurement While Drilling (MWD) technologies to optimize the wellpath and target high-productivity zones.
Despite limitations in access to advanced drilling tools, the team innovatively applied standard software to successfully implement geosteering methods.
Jafari noted that multilateral drilling is a complex technique rarely used in Iran's drilling industry.
However, the successful execution of the Jufair-9 well demonstrates the potential for replicating this approach in similar wells to enhance drilling efficiency.
With the increased wellbore contact with the reservoir rock, Pezhvak Energy anticipates significantly higher production from the Jufair-9 well.
