  • GE will provide its record-setting HA gas turbine, the company’s most advanced and efficient technology, for the project in Guernsey County
  • The 7HA.02 gas turbines, heat recovery steam generators and steam turbine generators will produce the equivalent electricity needed to power approximately 1.5 million homes
  • The deal also includes a multi-year services agreement and digital solutions with GE

ATLANTA—September 9, 2019—GE (NYSE: GE) announced today that Caithness Energy has ordered three of GE’s record-setting 7HA.02 gas turbines for its 1,875-megawatt, combined-cycle, natural gas electric generating facility—the Guernsey Power Station—in Guernsey County, Ohio.

In addition to GE’s 7HA.02 gas turbines, the world’s largest and most-efficient heavy-duty gas turbines, the order also includes heat recovery steam generators and steam turbine generators for each 7HA.02 unit, which will produce the equivalent electricity needed to power approximately 1.5 million homes within the PJM region.

“We look forward to working with GE again and are proud to deliver this state-of-the-art electricity generating solution for cleaner, more efficient power into the PJM Market,” said Ross Ain, Caithness Energy’s President. “Through the benefits of this technology, we look forward to better serving our users with flexible, reliable, efficient and low-cost electricity.”

GE will also service the facility under a multi-year services agreement and provide digital solutions to combine equipment sensor data with predictive analytics through GE’s Asset Performance Management (APM) software and managed services.  The APM software solution will monitor assets at Guernsey and predictive analytics will proactively recommend appropriate preventative maintenance to enhance plant reliability.

“Caithness Energy is an incredibly important and long-standing GE customer and we are proud that that they have chosen our world-class HA technology to be the heart of their Guernsey Power Station,” said Dave Ross, President of Sales, North America for GE Power. “The industry-leading technology and services that will be utilized by Caithness Energy will provide the residents and businesses in Ohio and the surrounding region with highly efficient, low-cost and reliable electricity, while being flexible to support renewables and the stability of the grid.”

Caithness Energy partnered with Apex Power Group to develop the Guernsey Power Station in the Utica and Marcellus shale region. When completed, it will be managed by Caithness Energy and will sell energy, capacity and ancillary services into the PJM segment, which provides electricity to millions of customers across thirteen states and District of Columbia . Gemma Power Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Argan, Inc., will be the engineering, procurement and construction company responsible for the project, which is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2022.

The HA turbine has been recognized for powering the world’s most efficient power plants in both the 50hz and 60hz energy segments. GE’s fleet of HA gas turbines has surpassed more than 388,000 operating hours and secured more than 95 orders from 40+ customers in 18+ countries. Earlier in 2019, GE announced that the HA will power the approximately 620-megawatt Hill Top Energy Center in Nemacolin, Pennsylvania; as well as an order for the Indeck Niles Energy Center in Niles, Michigan.
